Who Do We Worship?

Who do we worship? Sounds simple doesn’t it? But it is critical that we define who this God is we worship.  In a world of many “gods” it is important that we are specific in talking about, God Almighty Creator of the universe.  There must not be any confusion about the “who”.  We assume people know the God we are talking about.  But in a culture that uses the word “god” for whatever you want it to be, we must be careful.  There are over three thousand “gods” throughout history that have been worshiped in various cultures around the world.  That is a conservative number seeing as how anybody can worship something they consider a “god”.  The Bible is very clear and precise about who we are called to worship though.

Exodus 20:3

You shall have no other gods before me.

This was an important commandment because the children of Israel were guilty of making idols and “gods” that they would worship.  Instead of giving their worship to the true God they would worship false gods.  It got so bad over the course of history that it took a man named, Hezekiah to stand up and revolutionize Jerusalem.

2 Kings 18:1-8

In the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.  He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Abijah daughter of Zechariah.  He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done.  He removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the bronze snake Moses had made, for up to that time the Israelites had been burning incense to it (It was called Nehushtan).  Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him.  He held fast to the LORD and did not stop following him; he kept the commands the LORD had given Moses.  And the LORD was with him; he was successful in whatever he undertook. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him.  From watchtower to fortified city, he defeated the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory.

King Hezekiah cleansed the city of idols and restored true worship back to God.  He was a true worship revolutionist.  His father David had a heart after God and Hezekiah grew up to carry that same passion for God.  Did you notice that the Bible says he trusted in the God of Israel? There it is in the word describing who the true God is.  All throughout scripture God is described more than just the title, God.  He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. the God of Israel, God Almighty, Savior God, God Over All, and many more titles.  He is more than just a god, He is The God.  Today we may not make sacred stones and bronze snakes to worship but we must be careful to not let anything steal our worship away from the true God.  We have a call from God to be like Hezekiah and help restore true worship back to God.  We are called to be idol smashers in our own life and for the world.  Jesus, is the only way to heaven.

John 14:6

Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the father but through me.

Though our culture pressures us to be open-minded and believes that all religions lead to the same destination.  We must take a stand for the truth of what the word of God says.  Hezekiah held fast to THE Lord and did not stop following Him.  So we must hold fast to the truth of the One true Creator God.
