The Real Cost Of Control

You can’t fully follow God while clinging to control.

Let’s be honest—we hate losing control.
It’s one of the most uncomfortable, unsettling, and sometimes terrifying experiences we can face.

I remember growing up in Indiana, where snowy, icy winters were just part of life. One day, driving my little ’89 Ford Escort, I came around a corner too fast. The tires hit a patch of snow and ice—and just like that, I was sliding.

I slammed the brakes.
No response.
I pushed harder.
Still sliding.
My car had become a passenger on a road I could no longer command.
Thankfully, the car came to a stop just before hitting a tree.

But I’ll never forget that feeling—completely out of control. I wasn’t steering the car anymore. I was just along for the ride, hoping I’d come out on the other side safely.

That’s exactly how it feels when God calls us to surrender.

Control Is Comfortable—But It’s Also a Cage

When it comes to your relationship with God, control is often the last thing we’re willing to let go of.
We want to serve Him… but still call the shots.
We want His blessings… but on our terms.
We want His promises… but only if we can plan the process.

But God doesn’t work like that. He doesn’t just want your obedience—He wants your surrender. And surrender always comes at the cost of control.

Trust Requires Transfer

You will never give control to someone you don’t trust. So if you’re having a hard time surrendering to God, the root issue may not be control—it may be trust.

Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

We often quote this verse… but do we live it?

“Lean not on your own understanding” means just that—you don’t always get to understand. You don’t always get to see the whole map before you take the next step. You don’t always get the blueprint before you obey. Trust means saying: “God, I don’t know the outcome, but I know You. And that’s enough.”

What Areas Are You Holding Onto?

Where are you still trying to maintain control?

  • Your finances?
  • Your relationships?
  • Your timeline?
  • Your comfort?
  • Your reputation?
  • Your next step?

God doesn’t just want the easy areas of your life. He wants it all.
He wants full surrender.

Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Notice it doesn’t say you know the plans. It says He knows. And that’s the difference between control and trust. When you trust God’s character, you don’t need to control His methods.

Raise the White Flag

Let’s not just talk about surrender—let’s live it. Surrender means you raise the white flag of your will and say:

“God, I’m not the author of this story. You are.
You lead, I’ll follow.
You speak, I’ll obey.
Even if I don’t understand, I’ll trust that You do.”

It’s not a one-time decision—it’s a daily posture.
A daily cost.
A daily choice to give up your script and trust God’s sovereign plan.
