Motivation Is Overrated…

Motivation happens when you do something motivational.

If you wait for a feeling to hit you before you act, you may be waiting forever.  We can’t wait for the “feeling” in order to act, we must act our way into “feeling.” When we step out and begin to do the things that will better us we will begin to get motivation.  How many times do we use the excuse that we just aren’t motivated? Usually we say those words when we are sitting down or tired.  You will never hear someone who is doing something to better themselves say, “I just am not motivated to do that.” Why? Because they are already doing it! We only make excuses when we are in a vulnerable state of apathy. No one wants to diet when they are super hungry.  That is when the temptation hits you! You will never hear someone who has has eaten healthy food and has a full stomach say, “I wish I didn’t eat that good food for me.” No! It is when we are sitting around thinking about unhealthy food when we start to lose motivation to be healthy.  The point is, we have to just do it when it comes to whatever it is we want to do.  We can’t wait to be motivated to start doing what we should be doing, we just have to do it.

When we get going and start to do what we should be doing we will find the motivation to continue on.  Don’t sit around living a “one day” type of life.  Don’t put off what you could be doing now.  Don’t lie to yourself and say “one day” I’ll do that.  Do not be plagued by the law of Diminishing Intent, which says, “The longer you wait to do something you should now, the greater the odds are you will never actually do it.”

Get motivated and get going! Think about the reward of what would happen if you started to do what it is you want to do.  If you want to finish that project, think about the reward of when that is done.  If you want to lose weight, picture yourself at that goal weight.  If you want to get out of debt, picture yourself debt-free.  Get the reward in your mind and focus on that.  Don’t focus on the hard work it takes, or the obstacles you will face, or the time it may take.  Focus on the goal, the reward, the payoff!

What is it that you have been putting off doing? What is it that would make your life significantly better if you would just do it? How would it make your life better if you accomplished this thing? Do you really want it? NOW GET GOING AND DO IT!

Motivation is overrated.  Just doing it, isn’t!
