How to Build Spiritual Toughness During Hard Times

As Christians, we are not immune to facing trials in life. In fact, the Bible teaches us that we will face suffering and hardships in this world. Yet, many of us struggle to maintain our faith and hope in God when we face adversity. It’s essential that we learn how to be spiritually tough during hard times so we can emerge stronger and more effective for God.

Let me share with you some practical ways to build spiritual toughness and stay faithful during difficult seasons of life.

Stay Connected to God

The first step to building spiritual toughness is to stay connected to God through prayer, reading the Bible, and worship. These disciplines help us renew our minds, gain clarity, and find strength in the promises of God. When we cultivate a habit of seeking God’s presence regularly, we develop a deeper understanding of His character, love, and faithfulness, which strengthens our faith when we need it most.

Embrace the Struggle

No one enjoys going through trials, but we must learn to embrace the struggle and see it as an opportunity for growth. In James 1:2-4, the Bible tells us to consider it pure joy when we face all kinds of trials because the testing of our faith produces perseverance. We must remind ourselves that God is using our trials to refine our character and teach us valuable lessons that we can’t learn any other way.

Surround Yourself with Supportive People

It’s crucial to surround ourselves with people who can offer encouragement, guidance, and support during difficult times. We need friends who will listen without judgment, provide practical help, and remind us of God’s truth. It’s okay to ask for help when we need it…we all need it! Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.

Practice Gratitude and Focus on the Good

When we are going through hard times, it’s easy to focus on all the things that are going wrong. We must remember to practice gratitude and focus on God’s goodness and the blessings He has given us. We can journal, make gratitude lists, or simply take time to thank God for His provision, protection, and love. Focusing on the good can shift our attitude and give us the strength we need to keep going.

Keep an Eternal Perspective

Finally, we must keep an eternal perspective and remember that this life is not all there is. The Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 that our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. When we keep our eyes fixed on the eternal, we can endure the present hardships with hope and expectancy.

Building spiritual toughness during hard times is not easy, but it’s essential if we want to stay faithful and effective for God. We must stay connected to Him, embrace the struggle, surround ourselves with supportive people, practice gratitude, and keep an eternal perspective. When we do these things, we can find strength, hope, and peace in the midst of hardship, and emerge stronger and more resilient than before. Remember, God is with us in the good and the bad, and He promises never to leave or forsake us. Let’s cling to Him and trust Him through the storms of life.
