Attitude Is Everything: Developing The Mindset Of Jesus

Your attitude determines your altitude. If you want to rise higher in life, you have to think higher in faith.

Have you ever noticed how two people can experience the exact same circumstances but respond completely differently? One sees an obstacle while the other sees an opportunity. One complains about the problem while the other looks for a solution.

What’s the difference?

ATTITUDE!

Your attitude shapes how you think, respond, and experience life. You may not always choose what happens to you, but you can choose how you respond.

And no one modeled this better than Jesus.

Philippians 2:5 (NIV) “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.”

Think about that! We’re called to have the SAME mindset as Jesus. Not simply admire His example but actually follow it.

Let’s unpack three powerful ways Jesus demonstrated the mindset we’re called to develop.

1. Jesus Chose Humility Over Pride

Jesus was the Son of God. He had all authority, power, and glory. Yet He never used His position as an excuse for pride.

In John 13, Jesus washed His disciples’ feet. Understand the significance of this moment. Washing feet was one of the lowest responsibilities a servant could perform. Yet Jesus, the King of kings, willingly knelt down and served those He was leading.

The One who deserved to be served chose to serve!

Too many people are consumed with getting recognition and receiving the respect they think they’re owed. But Jesus demonstrated a completely different way to live.

Greatness isn’t about how many people serve you. It’s about how many people you’re willing to serve.

Pride asks, “What can you do for me?”

Humility asks, “What can I do for you?”

Imagine how different our families, churches, and workplaces would be if we followed His example.

2. Jesus Chose Faith Over Fear

Jesus faced incredible opposition, rejection, and betrayal. Yet He never allowed His circumstances to shake His confidence in the Father.

Consider Mark 4 when Jesus and His disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee. A furious storm erupted, threatening their boat. The disciples were terrified.

But where was Jesus?

Sleeping!

Now that’s a picture of peace!

The same storm that produced panic in the disciples couldn’t steal the peace Jesus possessed.

Why? Because Jesus trusted His Father.

Here’s the principle: Your circumstances don’t have to determine your perspective when your confidence is anchored in God.

Too often, we allow our external environment to control our internal condition. When things go well, we’re happy. When things get difficult, we’re miserable. But that’s not how Jesus lived. Having faith doesn’t mean pretending problems don’t exist. It means believing God is greater than whatever problems we face.

Don’t let the size of your storm determine the strength of your faith.

Quit allowing temporary circumstances to steal your eternal confidence!

3. Jesus Chose Love Over Bitterness

Perhaps the greatest demonstration of Jesus’ character happened on the cross. Jesus was mocked, beaten, falsely accused, and crucified. Yet listen to His response.

Luke 23:34 (NIV) “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

WOW!

While people were causing Him unimaginable pain, Jesus was asking the Father to forgive them. He responded to hatred with love, injustice with mercy, and cruelty with compassion. Now compare that with how easily we become offended over little things.

Someone cuts us off in traffic, and we’re frustrated. Someone says something we don’t like, and we carry bitterness for days. Yet Jesus, hanging on a cross, chose forgiveness.

You cannot control how people treat you, but you can control how you choose to treat them.

Jesus didn’t allow the hatred of others to change the love within Him.

Neither should we.

Your Mindset Is Your Responsibility

Colossians 3:2 (NIV) “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

Notice the word SET.

It implies intentionality. You don’t accidentally develop a Christlike mindset. You intentionally cultivate one. If you constantly feed your thoughts negativity, don’t be surprised when your perspective becomes negative.

Your thoughts are the seeds of your attitude. Whatever you plant in your mind will eventually grow in your life.

That’s why we must fill our minds with God’s Word and allow the Holy Spirit to transform our thinking. Don’t wait for perfect circumstances to live with joy and confidence. If you do, you’ll spend most of your life disappointed. The goal isn’t to be positive because everything is great. The goal is to remain hopeful because God is great!

The Bottom Line

As Christians, how we approach life is about more than personal happiness. It’s about representing Jesus.

People notice how we respond to difficulties, disagreements, and disappointments.

So here’s my challenge: Does your attitude make people want to know more about Jesus?

Choose humility over pride. Faith over fear. Love over bitterness. Don’t let one bad moment become a bad day. Don’t let one difficult person steal your joy.

Jesus modeled the way. Now it’s our turn to follow.

You can’t always change what’s happening around you, but through Christ, you can change what’s happening within you.

Keep growing. Keep believing. Keep moving forward.
