Never Forget This…

All too often, we tend to forget what God has done for us in the past. We get so caught up in the moment that the memories of His faithfulness tend to fade away. Forgetting how God has provided in the past is one of the easiest ways to lose our faith. We cannot allow our present obstacles to steal His past faithfulness. If God came through before, He can and will do it again.

I have been driving to my in-law’s house for almost 17 years now, and just recently, managed to get there on my own. They live off the backroads in the country, and every time we drive there, I am either talking, thinking, or listening. I rely on my wife to tell me each and every turn (and there are a lot). Left to myself, I always forget which way to go. So, needless to say, the first time I made it to their house without having to ask, I was very proud of myself.

Just like I forgot the direction to go to get to my in-law’s house time and time again, we too can forget how God has directed us in the past, and find ourselves in danger of missing His faithfulness. The Bible encourages us to always remember and to speak of His past faithfulness. Why does it say this? So we never forget how amazing our God was, is, and will always be. Oswald Chambers said, “Faith is deliberate confidence in the character of God whose ways you may not understand at the time.”

2 Thessalonians 3:3

But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.

It is only when we step out from underneath His covering that life begins to get dangerous. His promises and commands are the umbrella that we are called to live under. When we are under the umbrella of His authority we are under His protection. Just like a physical umbrella keeps us protected from the rain, staying under God’s authority is like being protected by a spiritual umbrella. But if we step out from underneath the spiritual umbrella, we are putting ourselves in a position to become subjected to the storms of life. It is not that the storms disappear when we are under the spiritual umbrella, but we are protected in the midst of the storms. Faith keeps us under the shadow of His protection.

Psalm 91:1

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
