How to Stop Rushing and Start Living: A Christian Guide to Slowing Down

I’ve heard that life often feels like a roll of toilet paper—the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes.

We’ve all felt it: that dizzying sensation that time is slipping through our fingers. We rush through meetings, answer texts, scarf down meals, and before we know it, the day is gone. And yet, in the middle of all the motion, we wonder: Am I truly living, or just speeding through life?

The world tells us that success is in the hustle. The faster we move, the more productive we are. But neuroscience—and Scripture—suggest something deeper. The more intensely we focus, the quicker time feels like it flies. That’s why a 12-hour workday can vanish in a blink, yet leave us feeling unfulfilled and behind.

This is the paradox of modern productivity: the more we chase time, the less of it we feel we have.

But here’s the truth, friend: the problem isn’t in your schedule—it’s in your spirit. It’s in the mindset of scarcity that whispers, You’re behind. You’re not enough. There’s no time to rest.

Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” We don’t need more time—we need more wisdom in how we use the time we’ve already been given.

The Mirage of Success

So many people are sprinting toward an invisible finish line called “success,” not realizing they’ve never truly defined what that means. More money? More recognition? More achievements?

But what if success isn’t found in the chase?

What if real success is learning to embrace life rather than escape into busyness? Jesus didn’t die for us to merely survive another Monday—He came so we might have life, and life to the full (John 10:10).

The Rest We Fear

Let’s be honest—rest makes us uncomfortable. For many of us, resting feels like slacking. It’s easy to say, I’ll rest when I’m done, but in truth, we’re never done.

From the people I’ve coached, I’ve learned that rest is more than taking a nap or a vacation. Real rest is about trust. Trust that God is still working, even when we stop striving. Trust that our worth is not in our to-do list, but in the One who calls us His beloved.

If rest feels like guilt, it’s because you’ve been trained to believe that your value is in your doing. But God says your value is in your being—being His child, being in His presence, being renewed.

Living From Faith, Not FOMO

So how do we escape the whirlwind? Not by doing more. But by doing less with greater focus and greater faith.

Let’s live by faith, not fear. Let’s be present, not frantic. Let’s trade the badge of busyness for the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.

Let’s simplify.

Let’s slow down.

Let’s live on purpose.

This is why I titled one of my books, “Life is simple, it’s just not easy.” But God gives us everything we need—if we’ll just stop long enough to receive it.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What are you chasing that might be distracting you from what truly matters?
  2. How can you redefine success through God’s lens, not the world’s?
  3. Where in your life do you need to give yourself permission to rest?

Let this be your reminder today: you are not behind, you are not late, and you are not forgotten. You are on a God-ordained journey, and every breath you have is an invitation to live it fully—for His glory and your good.

Now, go ahead and breathe.

You’ve got time.

Because you’ve got God.
