How To Get More Wisdom…

We are all in need of wisdom. It can mean the difference in your life. So how do you get more wisdom?

1. Ask God

James 1:5-8

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.  But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

You have not because you ask not. But there is a catch to asking God for wisdom…Don’t ask unless you are willing to do what He says. God will not pour out wisdom on us if you are not going to act on it. Asking God for wisdom is not just a question it is an obedience to do what He will say. Many people want to do what God wants them to do until they find out where He wants them to do. Wisdom may call you to do the most unlikeliest things in the most unlikeliest ways. Spend time asking God for wisdom everyday.

 2. Walk with the Wise

Proverbs 13:20

He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

It has been said that you will become like those whom you hang out with. Show me your friends I’ll show you your future. Are you spending time with those that will better you? Do you have mentors and lifters in your life? If you do not have wise people around you to pour into you then you are not going to get all the wisdom God has for you. God uses other people to speak into our life and to help shape us. Make sure you have the right people pouring into you. I spend a minimum of an hour a day with mentors. Most of my mentors I have never met…they are authors, speakers, and pastors. They mentor me through the books I read and the messages I listen to. Some of my mentors I met with during lunch or breakfast and ask questions to about life, business, money, people, ideas, leadership, etc…Make sure you are spending time with mentors so that they can lift you to a higher level.

3. Grow it

Colossians 1:10

And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.

If your not growing your not going anywhere. Wise people are always growing themselves, they never stop seeking. The other day my nine year old daughter Zion said, “When I grow up I want to be a kid.” Kids are always growing and seeking because they love to explore. Jesus said we need to have a child like faith. There is a temptation to stop growing when we get older. Exploration turn into apathy and we cease to step out. Sometimes we think we’ve “arrived” and we stop growing. But understand that growth is not automatic it has to be intentional. Just because time has passed does not mean we are getting wiser. Wisdom has to be grown within us. The more we grow the more we are able to discern God’s voice, His plans, and His purpose for our lives. Here are 3 things you must do in order to grow…

a) READ

Get into God’s word. It is impossible to know God unless you are in His word. Hearing about God will only take you so far, but knowing His word will open doors. Also get great books, resources, ideas to help you grow. I have different categories of books I read constantly. Make sure you are immersing yourself into books of wisdom.

b) LISTEN

Listen to those that can speak into your life. Are you being challenged by mentors around you? Not just hearing though. Hearing goes in one ear and out the other. Listening is about hearing then acting on it. Listen to those who speak into your life and ACT on it!

c) ASK QUESTIONS

Are you asking questions to learn from experiences? Are you pursuing God by asking questions? If you have more answers than you do questions than you have it backwards. Always be a seeker and a learner. Ask specific questions to those you can learn from. Be intentional about your growth. Get around those that are wiser and better at what you want to do and ask away!

Proverbs 24:3-5

By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.  A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength.
