Strange Directions…Guest Post From Chris Page

Proverbs 16:9 says,

“We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”

Words easier said than done. God DOES want us to plan life’s next move. He just wants to be able to steer what we plan. Whenever I plan a trip, I still look to the Rand McNally road atlas. The atlas gets me going in the right direction. But there’s this lady named Siri on my iPhone that gets me to the exact location. I plan, but Siri steers. She may even send me on a different route or road than I would have picked or expected. Same with Proverbs 16:9. You start the journey, and God will get you to exactly where you need to be. And usually, it’s not the same route you would have picked.

As a young man, God let me plan my course. I started moving toward a career in cartography (my college major)…I ended up working at a Christian Bookstore for $5.50/hour. I planned a move to Virginia to work for the federal government…I ended up at a Bible College in Ohio. I planned on being a youth pastor somewhere…God steered me into pioneering a church in my hometown instead. I don’t regret any of the choices I “planned”, because without starting my plan, God could have never steered me to His. The moral of the story is to do SOMETHING. Plan. Move. After all, it’s hard for God to steer a parked car.
