In God’s Kingdom, your identity isn’t achieved. It’s received.
That one truth can break every chain the enemy has tried to wrap around your life.
So let’s talk about a box we put ourselves in—the identity box. Too many believers are living inside it, trying to figure out who they are by what they’ve done, what they wear, where they’re from, or who others say they are. The problem? That kind of identity never sets you free. It keeps you trapped—chasing, performing, doubting.
There’s a battle in our culture—and it’s not new. It’s the battle for identity. teenagers wrestle with it. Adults wrestle with it. Society is confused about it. But here’s the truth: if you don’t find your identity in Christ, you’ll always be searching and never knowing.
The Problem: We Are Looking At The Wrong Things
When someone asks, “Who are you?” what do you say?
Most of us give a resume:
- Where we were born
- What we do for work
- How many kids we have
- What we’ve accomplished
But none of that defines who you are in Christ.
Even Christians fall into the trap of thinking, “If I do enough, serve enough, act holy enough, maybe I’ll finally be… enough.” But God doesn’t operate on a scoring system. He works through grace, not grades.
The Solution: Receive Your Identity
Let’s look at Jesus’ life. Before He ever healed anyone… before He preached a single sermon… before He went to the cross… He was baptized by John. And what happened? The clouds parted and a voice from heaven came down saying…
“This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.” — Matthew 3:17
That wasn’t after Jesus performed. It was before.
Why? Because identity comes first, and mission follows.
In God’s Kingdom, identity is not achieved — it’s received.
This one truth will break the box wide open. When you receive your identity in Christ, you stop chasing approval and start living in assurance.
Your Turn: Who Are You?
Don’t let the lies of the enemy keep you boxed in. You are not:
- Your past
- Your performance
- Your mistakes
- Your appearance
- Your personality traits
You are a child of God. Lavished in love. Adopted by grace. Equipped with purpose.
You are not tolerated. You are accepted.
C.S. Lewis put it this way, “Your real new self will not come as long as you are looking for it. It will come when you are looking for Him.” Identity begins when your eyes are on Christ.
Next week, we’re going to dig even deeper into what it means to live out of the box. But this week, take a breath and declare: “I am not trying to earn my identity. I’ve already received it in Christ.”
