Most of us live our lives asking one big question: How?
- “How will I fulfill God’s plan for my life?”
- “How will I overcome this challenge?”
- “How will I get through this season?”
- “How do I raise my kids? Be a better spouse? Succeed in life?”
The truth is, the question “how” is not a bad question—but it’s not the best question. If you find yourself constantly spinning in circles, stuck in the same place despite all your effort, it might be time to shift the question. You don’t need a better how—you need a better who.
The greatest breakthroughs in life don’t come from discovering a better method; they come from connecting with the right people.
The Power of Shifting Focus from “How” to “Who”
We often think the answer is waiting for us in some divine blueprint—a manual from heaven that will lay out every detail of our lives. Wouldn’t it be great if kids came with an instruction book? If our careers or marriages came with a how-to guide?
But life doesn’t work that way.
Instead, God often works through people. In fact, nearly every answer to your prayer will show up through a who. The people you surround yourself with are the ones who will influence, shape, and sometimes even define your path.
Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, put it this way:
“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” — Proverbs 15:22
Plans are good—but counsel is better. Your success is not determined by the perfection of your plan, but by the quality of your people.
Why God Uses People to Deliver His Plans
Look throughout Scripture, and you’ll see that God consistently works through people:
- He didn’t send a program to save the world. He sent a person: Jesus.
- He didn’t write the Ten Commandments in the sky. He gave them to Moses.
- He didn’t rebuild Jerusalem with blueprints. He called Nehemiah.
- He didn’t just drop Paul’s letters from heaven. He used Paul.
God always uses a who. Always.
And that truth still applies to you today. The how will come, but it will come through the who.
The Biblical Foundation for the “Who” Principle
Jesus modeled this beautifully. His first act of public ministry wasn’t to do miracles or preach a sermon. It was to build a team. He called 12 disciples to walk with Him, to build His ministry through relationship.
Why?
Because even Jesus—the Son of God—knew that purpose flows through people. He built a community first. If that’s how Jesus started, maybe it’s how we should start too.
Look at what Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says:
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”
Community is God’s design for growth. It’s the vehicle He uses to deliver His promises.
How to Begin Living the “Who”-Focused Life
So how do you shift from a “how” mindset to a “who” mindset? Let me offer three simple steps:
- Identify the Who’s Around You
Take inventory. Who in your life is helping you grow? Who challenges you, encourages you, and pushes you toward God’s best? Who do you need to spend more time with? - Pray for the Right Who’s
Ask God to send the right people into your life. Pray bold prayers: “God, connect me with those You’ve chosen to be part of my journey.” - Be a Who for Someone Else
Don’t just look for people who can help you. Be the kind of person who helps others. Someone else is praying for a who—and you might be the answer.
The answers you’re looking for in life will rarely come wrapped in a perfect plan. They will come walking into your life in the form of people. So stop asking “how” and start asking “who.”
Because the who will always lead you to the how.
