Dream Big But Live Small Part 1: The Power of the Dash

There’s a small, seemingly insignificant symbol that sits between two dates on every tombstone. We barely notice it. A dash. Just a tiny line between the day someone was born and the day they passed away. But that little dash represents everything — the life lived between the beginning and the end.

Let me say it this way: Your dash is your legacy.

One day, someone will summarize your life. Maybe in a paragraph. Maybe in a few words. But that tiny dash will say everything about who you were, what you valued, who you loved, and the impact you made. It may not seem like it now, but you are writing your dash every single day.

That’s why we have to stop waiting for life to begin “someday” and start living with intention now. Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Why would David pray that? Because when you live with the awareness that time is precious, you start treating it like it is.

Too many of us live like we have unlimited time. We push purpose off until the kids are grown, until the promotion comes, until we feel more “ready.” But here’s the truth: you have an expiration date**.** And that shouldn’t depress you — it should focus you.

You may not control when your life started or ends, but you absolutely control the dash. You’re not a prisoner of your past or a victim of your circumstances. You are a storyteller, and every day is a blank page.

Just like Alfred Nobel — the inventor of dynamite — who accidentally read his own obituary one day (they confused him with his brother, who had died). It called him “The Merchant of Death.” That shook him so deeply that he decided to rewrite the story of his life. He went on to establish the Nobel Peace Prize — a legacy not of death, but of peace.

He said, “Every man ought to have the chance to correct their obituary in midstream and write a new one.”

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to wait for a wake-up call. Today is the day to take the pen back and write a story that matters.

So, how do you live a meaningful dash?

Start with this: Dream Big. Live Small.
