Cut It Open: Finding The Truth Inside Your Walk With God

I once brought two apples on the stage with me. One was real, the other was fake. From a distance, you couldn’t tell the difference. Both were shiny, both had stems, and both looked like they belonged in a commercial. So, I asked everyone to guess which one was real. People pointed, debated, laughed a little—and then I pulled out a knife.

See, you don’t really know what something is until you cut it open.

The moment I sliced into them, the truth became obvious. The real apple had juice, seeds, and the sweet aroma of something alive. The fake one? Styrofoam. Nothing inside but the look of fruit without the life of it.

That moment paints a picture of how a lot of us live. From the outside, we look put together. We smile, serve, sing, and show up. We know how to play the part. But inside? We can be empty. Tired. Disconnected. We’ve learned how to polish the outside without tending to the inside—and we’ve become like that fake apple.

But here’s the good news: God is not impressed with appearances. He’s not checking how shiny we look; He’s checking for fruit. When Scripture says that “man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7), that’s not a warning—it’s a comfort. Because God sees what’s real in us, even when others can’t.

In Ephesians 5:1-2, Paul writes, “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love.” That word “imitate” isn’t about acting. It’s not about performance. It’s about becoming. Becoming someone who reflects the heart, the mindset, and the character of Christ—not just when people are watching, but when no one else is around.

In the days of Jesus, disciples would literally follow their rabbi so closely that they’d be covered in the dust of his sandals. That’s the kind of closeness Jesus invited when He said, “Come, follow Me.” It wasn’t a call to religion or image management. It was a call to relationship, to transformation, to walk in step with Him in every part of life.

The world doesn’t need more people who look spiritual. It needs people who are truly filled with the Spirit. The difference between the fake apple and the real one isn’t just appearance—it’s fruit. And real fruit doesn’t come from trying harder. It comes from staying connected to the source of life.

So if you feel hollow, dry, or disconnected today, let that be your invitation. Not to clean up, but to come close. To let God work on the inside. Because when He changes your heart, everything else follows.

Let’s stop trying to be shiny Christians and start being rooted disciples. Let’s walk so closely with Jesus that when life cuts us open, what pours out is the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, and all the life-giving things the world is starving to taste.
