Family was God’s idea before it was ever ours. All throughout Scripture, we see the value God places on households—so much so that when He sent His Son to earth, He chose to place Him in one.
Jesus didn’t appear as a full-grown man on a throne. He came as a baby, born into a family. He grew up with a mom and dad, siblings, a home, and the experiences we all go through. That tells us something: God shapes us through relationships, and the first relationships we often experience are right at home.
“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” — Joshua 24:15 (NIV)
This Season, Don’t Just Be Present—Be Intentional
The holidays can magnify the best and the worst in families. It’s a season of both connection and sometimes… conflict.
But here’s the challenge:
Don’t let what’s wrong with your family keep you from celebrating what’s right with them.
You don’t have to agree on everything to love fully. You don’t have to have the perfect family to show up with perfect grace. You just have to choose presence over perfection.
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” — 1 Peter 4:8 (NIV)
Making the Most of the Gift
Here are 5 simple ways to honor and enjoy the gift of family this holiday season:
- Be quick to forgive.Don’t carry offense into the new year. Set someone free—and you’ll free yourself in the process.
- Speak life. A kind word is more powerful than the best-wrapped gift. “The tongue has the power of life and death…” — Proverbs 18:21
- Make memories, not just meals.Moments matter more than the menu. Be present in the conversations, not just the preparation.
- Pray together. Prayer binds hearts. Take time to pause and bring your family before the Lord.
- Be the peacemaker.Every family needs one. Be the one who brings unity, even if others don’t.
When Family Is Hard...
Let’s be honest—some of us are walking into the holidays with empty chairs at the table, strained relationships, or wounds that haven’t healed.
God sees that too. And He’s close.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
If your family has fractures, ask God to begin the healing. And remember, even if your earthly family isn’t perfect, you belong to a spiritual family that will never leave you—God’s family.
