Don’t Be Shark Bait – Guard Your Attitude
Sharks are fascinating creatures. Powerful. Relentless. Attracted to blood in the water. And in many ways, they mirror the way our spiritual enemy works.
You and I are in a battle every day. Whether you recognize it or not, we’re swimming in spiritual waters—and the enemy is on the hunt. He’s not looking for the strong; he’s sniffing out the weak. Just like a shark is drawn to vulnerability, Satan is drawn to weakness in our faith. That weakness often shows up first in one place: our attitude.
When Your Attitude Stinks, You Sink
Our attitude isn’t just a mood—it’s a spiritual posture. It’s how we view God, life, people, and challenges. And when that posture turns negative, critical, or self-defeated, it opens the floodgates for the enemy to attack. Bad attitudes don’t just slow you down—they sink you. And when you sink spiritually, you become shark bait.
Paul reminds us in Colossians 3:2, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
That’s not just a cute devotional thought—it’s a survival strategy. If your attitude is fixed on what’s around you instead of what’s above you, you’ll always feel like you’re drowning.
Mud Happens—How Will You React?
I once coached my daughter’s soccer team during a particularly rainy season. Mud everywhere. I kicked the ball during practice and splat—a kid took a header and got mud all over his face. He froze. Everyone watched. Would he have a meltdown and lose it? We were all hanging in the balance as he looked around at everyone on the verge of tears…it seemed like eternity as we all watched…but then…
Suddenly, he screamed, “That was awesome!” and ran around laughing.
That’s it right there. Life’s going to hit you with some mud. But your attitude decides whether you crumble or conquer. Charles Swindoll said, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond.”
Scripture Is Clear: Adjust Your Attitude
- “Do everything without grumbling or arguing.” (Philippians 2:14)
- “Give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
- “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” (Proverbs 17:22)
The wrong attitude doesn’t just weaken your faith—it attracts attack. But the right attitude? It fortifies your faith and chases sharks away.
Choose Joy, Even with Mud on Your Face
You don’t have to be shark bait. Choose joy, choose faith, choose a God-centered perspective. When your attitude is anchored in Christ, the enemy has no scent to track and no foothold to grab.
