You Are Dead.

Our culture is fascinated with Zombies…over the last 50+ years ever since the movie White Zombie with Bela Lugosi, Zombies have become on the rise (no pun intended…or maybe it is…). Anyway, there are books, movies, TV shows, comics, stories, survival guides, on the famed topic of Zombies.

The truth is Zombies are real and have been around ever since the writings of the Bible. Maybe not physical, but spiritual Zombies. Those that are are followers of Christ who are a new creation, but they are trying to resurrect their old life. Their old ways of thinking, attitudes, fears, pride, talking, and unbelief. The Bible is clear that when we confess with our mouth and believe in our heart that Jesus is Lord we are born again, saved from our old life and made new in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Our old life and old ways of living should be dead and gone…no more. However, we tend to live a life of these old patterns trying to revive themselves within us like a Zombie virus. We beat ourselves up when this virus sneaks up within us. But we must understand that the old person is covered by the grace of Jesus.

Galations 2:20-21

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”

Jesus died to take our place of judgment and penalty. He gave His life so we could be free from the burden of sin and shame. I have good news for you…YOU ARE DEAD! You do not exist anymore spiritually. When God the Father looks at you He sees Christ, not you. Your sinful man has been put to death, you are now spiritually alive in Christ. And it is not us that lives but Christ that lives within us as followers of Him. Understand that your sins have been forgiven now and forever in Christ. This means that His grace covers us spiritually even though we wrestle with our physical existence on this journey of life. Spiritually speaking we are dead to our old self, but we must make sure that we keep that old self dead while on earth. It will want to rise up and resurrect its old way of living time and time again. This is why Paul talks about putting to death the sinful nature within us daily by walking in the Spirit not the flesh.

Romans 6:1-14

6 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

This means we MUST put to death the old ways of negative thinking, talking, pride, selfishness, bad attitudes, and FEARS that we were never intended to live with. We should be living without anything holding us back, because our life is ALL ABOUT JESUS not us! And when we can truly live that way we will experience a freedom and empowerment like never before. Never forget as a follower of Christ you are dead!
